Why it works

The Downloads folder accumulates faster than any other folder on your device and rarely contains anything you need long-term. Ten minutes of clearing it frees disk space and removes a small but persistent visual clutter.

Best for

  • Before a device backup
  • Any time your laptop feels 'full'

Variations

  • Sort by size and delete the 5 largest files you don't recognize — that's most of the space recovered in two minutes.
  • Move anything you actually need into a proper folder; delete the rest.

Frequently asked

Is it safe to delete old downloads?

Almost always yes. Installers, PDFs you already read, screenshots, zip archives — the originals exist elsewhere. Empty the trash afterward to actually reclaim space.
